Hello,

Here is some more news from the Belgium homefront … 

Today 21st July is a bank holiday in Belgium so Tommy could come home for a long weekend. Last Friday a nice bunch of friends (Benji, An, Luk, Rudy, Kristel & kids) waited for Tommy at the hospital at 5pm to take him out somewhere in Ghent. We went to a very cosy place that looked more like a funcky park – there were gipsy wagons, they had amazing good sangria, good simple food, a campfire was on around 10 pm and everybody was just very relaxed, sitting outside, talking, laughing, ….  We all had a very nice time and we hope to do this again in August but then without the jaw problems Tommy had. He made a wrong movement with his jaw when he had to do a long test on Friday afternoon and his jaw got out of position very easily. We went back to the hospital two times to get his jaw back in place as this is very painful. But that did not spoil the great evening we had afterwards!

Yesterday and today we went to Ghent and had loads of fun with my sister Sonia and Petra. At this time of year there are lots of activities for kids during the day in Ghent. Tonight, to end the nice relaxing long weekend we had lasagna that my sister made and it was delicious!

Re Tommy his condition: his upper legs hurt a lot and the doctors are looking into the possibility of also using botox to soften and relax the muscles. His elbow and arms are much better so the operation was really worth it. According to Tommy his view is getting better slowely so there is still hope that also there we will have more improvement. Until the time that Tommy can read books himself again, we have decided to get him a Daisy box (=special dvd box) and to order dvd’s on which books are recorded. In stead of reading a book, Tommy will listen to it. The first book we will order is the Alchemist of Paulo Coelho – that is Tommy’s choice. We will also subscribe to another programm that will send Tommy dvd’s on a weekly basis mentioning up to date “sports news” and “world news” – I think it is important that Tommy remains connected with the real world, with things that happen outside his world now. Tommy is very excited about this and I am convinced that this is a good thing for both Tommy his mind and spirit.

Hi, we are on hols since yesterday and surprised Tommy with a visit on Monday after his rehab. The kids had fun and as you can see Tommy clearly enjoyed Simon and Robyn’s presence and hugs …

Dezenamiddag  kwam Tommy een bezoekje brengen aan het ponykamp van nichtje Ellen. Ze was trots op haar nonkel Tommy dat hij haar kwam bekijken. Ze is de ganse week op kamp geweest en mocht dezenamiddag tonen wat ze allemaal geleerd had. Ze wilde heel graag op de foto met Tommy en ze wilde dat ik het op de blog zou zetten. Bij deze heb ik dat dan gedaan.

Hello everybody,

Here is another update in English as I doubt that all the foreigners among our friends/readers have the intention to study “Flemish” in the near future : – )))  Never say never – right?!

A lot has happened over the past month. Tommy was operated on his elbow and pinkie and after that they started working on his feet. The doctors have tried to set his left foot by putting it in plaster. This was extremely painful for Tommy as his foot was constantly in cramps. After a few days and loads of painkillers they decided to take the plaster off and to inject botox. Botox has a relaxing effect and this is much more comfortable for Tommy. He can work out again as he should and he has far less painful cramps.  

This afternoon I went to see Tommy with my parents and our children and he was extremely proud that he could walk all by himself, stand up without losing his balance, turn from one direction to the other, … With tears in his eyes he asked us (mainly my parents because they do not see him as often as I do)  whether we could notice the difference. Of cource we did see the difference!!  He had been practising every single evening – all by himself in his room – after rehab. Sitting down on his bed, getting up and trying to find his balance. Sitting down again, getting up and so on. We still have a long way to go but he will get there at the end.

During the week Tommy works out a lot. He starts at nine and his day finishes at four. The weekends are mainly to relax and to catch up with friends and family. Last weekend we had Flore’s birthdayparty (= my twinbrother’s eldest girl who became 5) and Sunday we had a great day with my sister, Petra and Filip at a very nice park where the kids could play and climb and where we even made a boat trip. Next weekend my brother Stijn his little girl Jana will be baptised so there is another nice event to look forward to!

I would like to end this mail by thanking all of you for your support and friendship. So many people have been so nice to us and this really keeps us going eventhough it can be very hard at times. All the nice emails, the nice cards, beautiful flowers, even books I received make my heart smile … and give Tommy the courage to keep on fighting.

Dag iedereen,

Vorige week woensdag heeft Tommy een inspuiting met Botox in zijn teen gekregen omdat hij altijd krampen kreeg. Hierdoor kon hij niet zo goed oefenen met lopen omdat hij regelmatig pijn had. Zijn teen kwam op de meest vervelende momenten in kramp en dan kon Tommy niks meer doen. De  dokters hebben dan geprobeerd of dit met een gips kon verholpen worden, maar achteraf heeft men toch een inspuiting moeten geven omdat de gips ook niet hielp.

Het voorbije weekend voelde Tommy al een verschil in zijn teen. Nu alles meer relaxed is kan hij zijn therapie ook beter volgen. Wij hopen nu dat stappen nog vlotter zal gaan.

Vorige week donderdag heeft hij nog een leuke uitstap naar zee gedaan met onze bomma, nonkel Jef en tante Moniek. Ze zijn hem rond drie uur komen ophalen en zijn dan samen naar Blankenberge gereden. Hij heeft er een heel stuk op de dijk gewandeld en natuurlijk lekker gegeten.

Hij heeft ook zitten pootje baden in zee. ’s Avonds had hij ‘een goei kleurke van de goei lucht.’

Vrijdagavond zijn mama en papa hem gaan ophalen om hem mee naar Diest te brengen. Ze hebben er meer dan  drie uur over gedaan.Het was superdruk op de weg. ’s Avonds is Benjamin hem komen opzoeken. Ook twee collega’s van mama kwamen goedendag zeggen. Mama had een kaasschotel voorzien en iedereen vond het weer gezellig.

Zaterdagnamiddag heeft Tommy weer een leuk verjaardagsfeestje gehad bij zijn familie in Ronse. Zijn nichtje was jarig.

Jullie zien het, Tommy moet wel hard werken door de week, maar in het weekend is er tijd genoeg voor ontspanning.

Dag iedereen,

Na een lange pauze hier weer wat nieuws van Tommy.

Vorige week hebben wij een overleg gehad met het team dat Tommy begeleidt. Zij vertelden ons meer over de therapie die Tommy volgt en over zijn vorderingen. Tot nu toe gaat hij nog steeds vooruit, het enige waar we ons nog zorgen om maken is zijn zicht. Het is voor iedereen erg onduidelijk hoe dit verder zal evolueren. Er zijn momenten dat Tommy heel duidelijk kan beschrijven wat hij ziet, maar op andere momenten kan hij het meest eenvoudige niet benoemen.

Wij proberen ons hierover zoveel mogelijk te informeren bij verschillende personen en instanties, maar tot op heden hebben wij nog geen antwoord op onze vragen.

Twee weekends terug hadden Ann en Benjamin een verrassingsfeestje voor Tommy georganiseerd. Ze hadden enkele vrienden uitgenodigd die hij al lange tijd niet meer gezien had. Het heeft hem zeker deugd gedaan.

Vorig weekend is hij naar het trouwfeest van Cappe geweest, hij heeft het erg naar zijn zin gehad.

Het is ongelooflijk hoe opgewekt Tommy ondanks alles blijft. Zijn positieve ingesteldheid is een bron van kracht voor de familie die dagelijks met hem in de weer is. Nooit zal hij eens klagen of zeggen dat hij het niet meer ziet zitten. Ik ben echt trots op hem. Dat hij zo sterk kan zijn!

De logopediste kijkt dagelijks de blog na met hem. Ze lezen dan samen de berichtjes die jullie schrijven. Het maakt hem steeds weer blij te zien en te lezen dat jullie nog aan hem denken.

Dat was het voor vandaag, ik heb nu vakantie, dus hoop ik wat regelmatiger te kunnen schrijven.
